(Reuters] – Friday’s half-century old bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh ahead of President Joe Biden’s visit. It highlighted the dangerous state of many of the United States transportation infrastructure. The US is set to receive a trillion dollar infusion in the next few years.
According to U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2021 National Inventory, Pittsburgh Bridge is in bad condition like nearly 44,000 others across the country.
Authorities stated that 10 people were injured when the snow-covered span collided with Fern Hollow (a wooded valley) at 6:01 AM (1100 GMT). After the massive collapse caused by the snow, several nearby houses were evacuated temporarily. The situation was eventually under control.
According to the U.S. Transportation Department, this four-lane bridge was constructed in 1970.
Corey O’Connor, a Pittsburgh City Council Member said that the impact of the collapse could have been even worse. CNN’s Corey O’Connor said that “if it was rush hour, then we would have a couple hundred cars down there in that valley.”
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a “poor rating” does not mean that a bridge is in danger of collapse, however it should still be checked regularly. According to the fire chief of the city, reporters were informed that the collapsed bridge had been inspected in September.
Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure investment package is the most significant in recent decades. It provides billions of dollars to improve bridges and roads as well as transit.
This is a significant increase in bridge repairs than previous years, as the Transportation Department revealed earlier this month.
Pennsylvania accounted for the third largest share with $327 Million.
It will be a great help.
A Department of Transportation database shows that roughly 11% of 730,000 Northeastern State bridges were rated as in poor condition. That’s nearly double what the national average is. These bridges carry 5% of Pennsylvania’s daily traffic.
In a 2018 report, the engineering society gave the state’s bridges a D-plus grade. The engineering society also gave low marks to its roads, sewer, water, transit, and other systems.
Society members said that the state has made significant progress since it approved an increase in fuel taxes to help fund repair funding. It praised Pennsylvania for its bridge inspection program which, it claimed, exceeded federal standards.
Pittsburgh is a city that has 300,000. It lies at the confluence three of three rivers. The steep hills and picturesque bridges are what make it a post-industrial area. The Transportation Department has been pressed by city officials to allow pedestrian safety to be improved and speed limits to be reduced.
Karina Ricks was the former city transportation director and she took up a position at the Federal Transit Administration last year.
