WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol has issued subpoenas to several individuals involved in an unsuccessful “alternate electors” scheme to keep former President Donald Trump in office, the committee’s chairman said on Friday.

14 individuals were subpoenaed, including David Shafer, chairman of Georgia Republican Party and Mayra Roz, an attorney and activist for conservative causes in Michigan.

The U.S. president is selected by 538 electors, known as the Electoral College, with electors apportioned based on each state’s population.

Rudy Giuliani (his lawyer) was in charge of Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign. He oversaw the efforts to nominate illegitimate candidates from seven lost states, CNN reported last Wednesday, citing three sources.

Bennie Thompson, chairman of the committee said Friday that they are seeking out information on those activities and encouraged people who have been subpoenaed to cooperate.
