Google cloud unit shuffles partnerships and sales groups, email says

As GoogleIt tries to take market share away from its larger competitors in cloud computing AmazonAnd MicrosoftCompany’s cloud division has been reorganized. It is now focusing on shifting the leadership in its partnership and sales operations.

Rob EnslinAccording to emails that were sent out to cloud employees and seen by CNBC, a few changes have been made this week by VP of Google’s cloud sales. The president of cloud sales at Google, he informed staff that Carolee Gearhart (previously G Suite) was leaving the role as global leader for channel partners in the Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace.

Enslin stated, “With Carolee’s departure we are taking advantage of the opportunity to further refine and strengthen our newly united partner organization.”

Kevin IchhpuraniHe was previously the vice president for global ecosystem and will now be the head of channels. He was previously under the cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, but will report to Enslin.

CRN reportedGearhart’s replacement was announced earlier this week by Ichhpurani.

Kurian was fired as the head of Google’s cloud division just over three years ago.OracleTop executive has dramatically restructured the engineering department while expanding sales.

CNBC reportedKurian had been trying to reduce the number of technical units, in order to expand market share. The unit has experienced a string of high-level departures, including the head of developer relations and the leader of engineering and of some key cloud products.

In the latest shakeup Bronwyn HastingsFormer Citrix executive, who was responsible for partnerships previously, will assist Ichhpurani with leading channels while also being in charge of the “Technology and Application” partnerships team.

Lindsey Scrase will report to Greg Tomb. Greg Tomb manages both sales and security for Workspace. Scrase’s role in the new Workspace sales team has yet to be fully defined.

Enslin stated in an email that these changes were made to help “organizational focus on accelerating global sales.” Google spokeswoman confirmed that changes had been made and said the company was trying to unify dispersed teams into a single entity dedicated to partnerships.

Ichhpurani stated in an email that he was part of the exact same chain that he was “very saddened” by Carolee’s passing.

Ichhpurani stated that the news “brings some organizational changes that we were not able to foresee” at their January 13th All Hands meeting. He stated that Google’s changes are expected to help it “build the largest partner-centric company at scale.”

A recent blog postIchhpurani stated that Google plans to spend more than twice its current spending on its cloud ecosystem in the coming years. Google claimed in its last earnings reportCloud revenue increased by 45% in October to $4.99 Billion. Analysts’ expectations were not met. Meanwhile, operating losses fell to $644 Mn from $1.21B. Investors will be closely following the fourth quarter of the company’s results.

Although Google is gaining market share in cloud infrastructure services, it remains a distant third. It has not yet turned a profit. Amazon Web Services is the leader with 33% market share as of third quarter. Synergy Research Group. Microsoft Azure is the leader in market share with 20%, and Google holds 10%.
