(Reuters) – Former President Donald Trump stated Saturday that if he ran for the presidency in 2024, he would pardon those charged with criminal offenses related to the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters at the U.S. Capitol.

Trump did not say whether he would run for President again following his defeat in 2020 by Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump responded to the applause, “Another thing that we’ll do, so many people had been asking me about this, is if we run and win, then we will treat these people fairly starting Jan. 6.” We will be fair to them. If they need pardons, we’ll give them pardons. We are treating them unfairly.

On Jan. 6, 2021 thousands of Trump supporters stormed Congress, making it the most violent assault against Congress since the War of 1812. The attackers tried to prevent Congress from recertifying Biden’s win by claiming that Trump lost the November 2020 election due to fraud.

One of four Capitol guards who died in the suicide attack on September 11th, 2001, was the police officer who died at the scene. Around 140 police officers suffered injuries during the hour-long attack. Four others were killed in the riot. More than 700 individuals have been arrested for their participation in the assault.
