(Reuters] Approximately 1,300 U.S. airlines were canceled on Sunday following a severe winter storm that battered northeastern parts of the country.
Several U.S. states had declared emergencies https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-east-coast-prepares-heavy-snow-plunging-temperatures-blizzard-hits-2022-01-29 in response to the storm, which formed in the Atlantic Ocean off the Carolinas and was forecast to continue depositing snow into Sunday morning as it moved north to Maine.
At 9:15 a.m., the total number of cancellations for flights to, from, and within the United States had reached 1,300. Each airport had more than 200 flights cancelled as of Sunday early at LaGuardia Airport, New York City.
A fierce winter storm whipped up snowfalls exceeding 2ft (60cm), in parts, and brought strong winds. This caused flight cancellations to thousands and forced governors to close roads across Rhode Island.
The National Weather Service stated that Sunday’s weather would be much calmer on the East Coast.
According to the police, Nantucket was experiencing improved conditions after the nor’easter caused flooding roads on Saturday. A photo shared on social media shows that the water was so deep that two high school students could row their canoes along the flooded streets.
