SEOUL (Reuters – North Korea announced on Monday that the Hwasong-12 was tested as a “mid-range missile ballistic missile”. This is the first test of a Hwasong-12 since 2017.
South Korean officials and Japanese officials reported the launch on Sunday. Officials and analysts believed the launch was an intermediate-range missile (IRBM) that North Korea had not tried since 2017, when it stopped testing large missiles.
“The purpose of the inspection firing test was to selectively inspect the ground-to–ground long-range mid-range ballistic missile Hwasong-12, and verify the overall accuracy,” KCNA stated.
KCNA stated that missile launch was carried out to safeguard neighboring nations and that test warheads were fitted with cameras that captured photos from space.
