According to FBI Director Christopher Wray, the Chinese government poses a threat to the West that is more brazen and dangerous than ever. Wray accused Beijing of taking American ideas and innovations and launched massive hacking operations.

This was a sharp rebuke to the Chinese government, just days before Beijing will take the world stage with the hosting of the Winter Olympics. The speech made it clear that the U.S. still views China as a major threat to its long-term economic security, even though American foreign policy is still dominated by tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Chinese government officials consistently denied allegations from the U.S. government. The spokesman of the Embassy in Washington stated last July, “groundless attacks” by Americans and “malicious smears” about Chinese cyberattacks. In the statement, China is described as “a staunch defender of cybersecurity.”

China’s threat is not new. However, it hasn’t diminished over the past decade.

Wray stated that he has spoken extensively about the threat ever since he became director in 2017. “But I want to focus on it here tonight because it’s reached a new level — more brazen, more damaging, than ever before, and it’s vital — vital — that all of us focus on that threat together.”

Five Chinese military officers were charged by the Justice Department with hacking major American businesses in 2014. A year later, China and the United States announced at the White House a partnership to stop each other from stealing intellectual property or trade secrets in order to gain commercial advantage.

The U.S. continues to make accusations about China regarding hacking, espionage, and other issues over the years.
