WASHINGTON, (Reuters) –Democratic U.S. In a Tuesday statement, Senator Ben Ray Lujan’s chief of staff stated that Senator Ray Lujan had been admitted after suffering a stroke.

Lujan (49) suffered a stroke Thursday. He underwent surgery in Albuquerque to reduce swelling.

In a short statement, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that “we are very grateful” for his full recovery. He said, “I think the Senate will continue with its business.”

Democrats are unable to afford to lose one vote in the 50-50 Senate. There, their slim majority depends on Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote.

These big votes include the confirmation vote of President Joe Biden’s nominee for replacing retiring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, and a potential second attempt at passing some of Biden’s domestic spending bills “Build Back Better”.

Although it wasn’t clear whether Republicans would support Biden’s Democrats, they voted for him as his Supreme Court nominee.

Many states allow their governors the power to name a temporary replacement if a senator is unable to continue serving. New Mexico also has a Democratic governor.

Lujan’s absence caused the Senate Commerce Committee to postpone votes for Wednesday on nominations for Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission and Consumer Product Safety Commission. “To take into account the need for all Democratic vote in order to move some nominees forward,” Tricia Enright (panel spokesperson) stated in a statement.
