Washington Football Team officially renamed Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders officially became the Washington Football Team.

Jason Wright, team president, announced the change on Wednesday’s Today Show. The announcement ends a search that took more than one year after the club ditched its former name – the “Redskins” – in July 2020 after corporate sponsors including FedExthreat to shut down business. The name has been criticized for being demeaning to Native Americans by critics.

Washington signs with the Cleveland Guardians. They had removed Native American logos in their previous logos. Major League Baseball’s franchise has changed its name last July – dropping the “Indians” after critics argued it was racist. For the 2022 MLB season, the Guardians name will be in effect.

Wright said that Wright would create a new identity to help the club increase its value. The club is currently repairing its reputation after being accused of misconduct at work.

However, despite an unpredictable 2021 season that saw Dan Snyder, team owner, leave, the team missed the playoffs. 17th timeWashington is the fifth most valued National Football League franchise with $4.2 Billion, despite being his owner for 23 years. Forbes.  

Wright stated that the team was considering the name “Wolves”, which is a favorite of fans, but “trademarks owned by other teams would limit us in our ability to name the name our own,” Wright wrote in an a blog post on Jan. 4. Wright, who is the NFL’s first Black president, will guide this effort along with Snyder.

FedEx Field is the club’s final lease. The club was interested in a new stadium with 60,000 seats at the old RFK location in Washington D.C., where it played between 1961 and 1996.  

But the truth is that the U.S. Department of the Interior has the property that RFK uses. The team must secure another lease in order to continue to use the land. The club must also satisfy D.C. officials. Virginia lawmakers, including Glenn Youngkin (new governor), are also pushing for the new stadium to attract the team.

This could prove to be a more straightforward route than the RFK website, since the franchise isn’t as popular. sports club on Capitol Hill.

Snyder resolved a dispute in 2021 with his co-owners. FedExFred Smith is chairman. reportedly paid $875 millionTo purchase minority shares in the team.
