(Reuters) – North Americans may have to be patient this winter if they are tired of storms and snow, according Punxsutawney Philip, the Pennsylvania groundhog.

Phil, who, according to tradition, can predict when winter will end in the future, was disappointed when on Wednesday he saw his shadow and emerged from his stump.

On February 2, Groundhog Day, many revelers flock to Punxsutawney in northeastern Pennsylvania, 80 miles (128km), to watch a groundhog named “Phil” predict the future.

Folklore from 1887 states that if the groundhog sees its shadow, it will be six more weeks of cold and windy weather. The onset of spring will be near if the sky is dark and it doesn’t appear to shadow.

However, there was a glimmer of hope provided by Staten Island Chuck, a rival groundhog in New York. He did not leave traces when he emerged from his home Wednesday morning.
