REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration(Reuters) – Iran’s foreign minister said on Saturday that a U.S. move to restore sanctions waivers to Tehran was not enough and Washington should provide guarantees for the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal with major powers.
Washington restored Friday the waivers that allowed international nuclear cooperation projects. Indirect U.S.-Iran talks about reviving nuclear agreement enter their final leg in Vienna.
“The lifting of some sanctions can in itself translate into good faith,” Hossein Amirabdollahian said in comments reported by Iranian media.
“While what is on paper is good, but it’s not enough,” he added.
Amirabdollahian said one of the major issues in the Vienna talks was getting “guarantees, especially from the West, to fulfil their obligations.”
“We demand guarantees in the political, legal and economic spheres. Certain agreements have already been reached,” he added.
Washington restored waivers that allowed Russian, Chinese, and European companies to do non-proliferation work. This made it more difficult for Iranian nuclear sites from being used for weapon development. In 2019 and 2020, US President Donald Trump canceled the waivers.
Eight rounds of indirect talks have taken place in Vienna between the United States and Iran since April. They aimed to revive the accord with major powers (the United States, China Russia, France Germany and Britain) that lifted sanctions from Tehran in exchange for restrictions regarding its nuclear program.
Trump pulled out the United States of the deal, reimposing harsh sanctions against Iran. Iran started to break the nuclear bans in the pact. Tehran maintains that the nuclear program it has is for peaceful purposes.
Ali Shamkhani (secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council) stated in a tweet on Saturday that “Iran’s legal rights to continue research, development, and maintain its peaceful nuclear capabilities and achievements, along with its security,… can’t be curbed through any agreement.”
