(Reuters) – After former Miami Dolphins head coaches Brian Flores brought a racial disparagement lawsuit against the NFL, Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL, told clubs that the NFL would reevaluate policies relating diversity, equity, inclusion.

Flores, who is Black, was fired by the Dolphins last month after back-to-back seasons with winning records, saying it was emblematic of the treatment of Black coaches https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/former-dolphins-coach-flores-wants-coach-again-be-an-agent-change-2022-02-03, who comprise a fraction of team staff positions while 70% of NFL players are Black.

Goodell acknowledged that Flores had concerns. He said that they will not hesitate to use the legal process to “reassess, modify and adapt our strategies” in order to be consistent with the league’s diversity commitment.

Goodell sent a memo to all employees of the league and to clubs, which was seen by Reuters. It stated that “We have made substantial efforts to promote diversity” and had adopted many policies and programs that have resulted in positive changes in many areas.

However, we have to admit that the results were unacceptable especially for head coaches.

We will review and reevaluate all policies, guidelines, and initiatives that relate to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The NFL currently has only one Black head coach on its 32-team roster.

Goodell stated that they are retaining experts to help with their review, and asked former and current players for their opinions.

“Our objective is simple, make our efforts more effective and that of the clubs better so real and tangible outcomes will be achieved,” he said.

“We are conscious of the importance of understanding the lived experiences and perspectives of all members of the NFL Family to ensure everyone has the opportunity to succeed and that they are treated with dignity and respect.”

Flores had also said his refusal to throw games https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/former-dolphins-coach-says-refusal-throw-games-cost-him-his-job-2022-02-02 as a way to improve the football club’s chances of landing a top draft pick ultimately cost him his job.

We also consider any concern regarding the integrity or fairness of NFL games serious. Goodell assured that the matter will be investigated thoroughly and independent.
