RZESZOW (Poland) – On Monday morning, two U.S. military aircraft could be seen arriving at a Polish airfield. More were likely to land later that day. They are carrying the majority of extra soldiers President Joe Biden sent last week in response to the Ukraine crisis.
Biden ordered almost 3,000 soldiers to be sent to Eastern Europe in order to defend NATO’s eastern flank from a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia denies Western claims that it intends to invade Ukraine, having deployed more than 100,000 soldiers near its border with Ukraine.
1,700 soldiers, mainly members of the 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg are expected to go to Poland while 1,000 troops based here in Germany will move eastward to Romania.
U.S. Army Major General Christopher Donahue arrived Saturday as the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. A military source stated that most troops will arrive Monday.
Two military transport aircraft were seen arriving at Rzeszow Jasionka Airport in southeastern Poland Monday morning. An airport worker told Reuters that three additional planes are expected to land there. The spokesperson from the Polish military said that more planes would be arriving on Monday. However, he didn’t specify how many.
