Tesla braces for lawsuit from California’s civil rights agency, DFEH

California’s civil rights office has told Tesla that Tesla has the right to file a civil suit against it. This is following an investigation into the “undisclosed allegations of race discrimination or harassment at unspecified Tesla sites” within the state.
Tesla disclosed the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing’s notice to him in a financial filingPublished Monday. Tesla was notified on Monday, the filing stated.
Tesla’s headquarters were moved to Austin, TexasElon Musk’s solar and electric vehicle business continues to operate many facilities in California, even though it closed last year. The Tesla operation in the state includes its first U.S. car assembly plant in Fremont. There is also a research center in Palo Alto. It has a design centre in Hawthorne. Additionally, Tesla manufactures energy storage systems at Lathrop.
Tesla received the DFEH notification after a number of complaints by current and former Tesla workers.
Last October, the jury of a San Francisco courtroom was elected. federal court decidedTesla should pay Owen Diaz, an ex-worker, $137 million. Diaz claimed that they created a hostile environment at work and used epithets. Diaz said that colleagues made disparaging remarks about him and Black workers. They also told Diaz to “go back Africa” and left graffiti and a drawing of racist characters in the bathroom.
Tesla stated in Monday’s financial filing that it did not consider the law and facts to support the verdict and would appeal the decision if the court does not reduce the damages.
Melvin Berry (another former Tesla employee) was awarded $1million in arbitration. He complained of similar experiences during his time at Tesla between 2015 and 2016. He told his story after the arbitration decision. Black EnterpriseBerry was told by his supervisor that the boss used racist slurs frequently. He complained and had to work more hours using heavier equipment.
After Berry and Diaz made their complaints, there have been more lawsuits alleging that Tesla was subject to racial discrimination and harassment. Kaylen Barker (a former Tesla employee who is gay and Black) filed a lawsuit last week. said in a suitA co-worker of Tesla’s in Lathrop assaulted her verbally, and she threatened to kill her. She worked as a brake inspector at the Tesla plant.
DFEH, the company, and DFEH didn’t immediately reply to inquiries for comment.
