REUTERBOSTON (Reuters) – An ex-executive at Wynn Resorts Ltd (NASDAQ) was sentenced Wednesday to a one year term for bribing his daughter to get into a university.
Gamal Aziziz, 64 was sentenced to the most severe prison term by U.S. district Judge Nathaniel Gorton of Boston. This sentence came after he had been convicted on the first trial.
He is just one of many rich parents nationwide who are facing charges for enabling their children to attend elite schools.
Fifty-seven people have been charged in the investigation, which centers on a scheme in which parents conspired with California college admissions consultant William “Rick” Singer to secure their children’s college admissions fraudulently.
Singer was convicted of facilitating cheating in college entrance exams, and funneling money from parents to corrupt athletics officials and coaches to ensure their kids were admitted to universities as fake athletes.
Prosecutors claimed that Aziz (also known as Gamal Abdullaziz) paid Singer $300,000. to ensure his daughter’s enrollment at the University of Southern California. Singer was a basketball recruit.
Prosecutors claimed that Aziz supplied Singer photos of his girl that he was able to use in creating a fake athlete profile for USC. The USC admissions process included fake honors and awards. The admission was granted in 2018.
Aziz, the ex-president of Wynn Resorts Macau subsidiary was also convicted. John Wilson is due to be sentenced next Wednesday.
