University of California agrees to pay $243 million to settle doctor sex abuse claims -Breaking

LOS ANGELES, (Reuters) – University of California officials will pay $243 Million to settle sexual abuse claims by 200 UCLA gynecologists.

University of California Regents have reached an agreement to settle the lawsuits that stemmed from Dr. James Heaps’ 65-year-old accusations.

Heaps is not included in the settlement, having retired after 30+ years of service at UCLA. Heaps will be tried later in the year for 21 charges of sexual abuse.

He has repeatedly maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

UCLA issued a written statement Tuesday saying, “The conduct that Heaps is accused of having committed is repugnable and against the university’s value system.”

The university stated that it was grateful to those who came forward and that the settlement would be one of the steps towards healing and closure for all the involved plaintiffs.

In November 2020, the University of California agreed to $73 Million to settle a lawsuit against Heaps. However, hundreds of women refused to agree to that settlement and remain part of their own cases.
