Malaysian manufacturers of palm oil and medical gloves have come under increasing scrutiny for allegedly abusing foreign workers.
VS Industry, a supplier of services in electronics manufacturing, stated that the third party review will be based upon 11 indicators of forced labor as defined by the International Labour Organization.
It stated in a filing to the stock exchange that “The scope” of PwC Consulting’s appointments also includes providing workshops to board members and managers to raise awareness about forced labour and to improve risk management.
PwC Consulting didn’t immediately reply to our request for comment.
Malaysian authorities charged ATA IMS (a rival firm that supplies Dyson high-end appliances) with violating labour laws on worker accommodation.
ATA requested that charges be dropped. It claimed infractions had been caused by challenges during pandemic.
After an independent audit by ATA’s labour practices, and allegations made by a whistleblower, Dyson terminated its contracts with ATA.
ATA acknowledges some violations, has made certain improvements, and now complies all regulations and standards.
VS Industry explained that the purpose of the review is to understand, identify and close any gaps, specifically in relation to labour practices, under a government initiated worker recalibration scheme. The independent labour rights consultant would support the project.
Malaysian employers can use the government’s program to legalize undocumented foreign workers and holders of expired long term visit passes.
