SINGAPORE (Reuters), – Avolon, a large aircraft leaser with Russia, is preparing for possible disruptions and was concerned about the impact of sanctions on international payment transfer transfers. The company’s chief executive stated Tuesday.

Officials from the United States have indicated that Moscow may launch an attack against Ukraine if it has more than 100,000 soldiers close to its border. The West is preparing severe sanctions.

Avolon is focusing on ensuring airlines that fly over the region are properly insured, chief executive Domhnal Slattery said to Reuters at the Singapore Airshow.

He stated that Russia could be subject to sanctions if they were placed on it.

Slattery explained, “So that we focus on making sure we have the right payment for our rentals,”

Slattery indicated that Avolon is privately held and has only 20 Russian-registered aircraft. A few Ukrainian planes are also available.

Company is currently working with customer in Ukraine to transfer the aircraft to more neutral territory. However, the company will wait to see what happens before making a decision to leave Russia.

Slattery stated, “A poor situation in Ukraine cannot be good for anyone.”
