According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pregnant mothers who are vaccinated against Covid-19 will likely prevent their baby from being hospitalized due to it when they give birth.
According to a Tuesday study by the CDC, infants younger than six months of age were 61% more likely to have Covid if their mothers had Pfizer and Moderna’s two dose vaccines during pregnancy.
A maternal vaccination was administered 21 to 14 days after delivery. This provided an additional level of protection for the baby, which is 80%.
The head of the CDC’s infant outcomes branch Dr. Dana Meaney–Delman stated that Covid is prevented by antibodies given to the infant from their mother.
Meaney Delman, who spoke to reporters on Tuesday during a conference phone call, said that “unfortunately, vaccination for infants younger than 6 months is not currently in the horizon”.
The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynology published research that showed the antibodies of the Covid vaccine passed from mother to child. The CDC study shows that these antibodies can protect infants born after birth.
The study found that 84% of infants admitted to hospital with Covid were not vaccinated. Between July and January 2017, the study examined 379 infants in 20 child’s hospitals across 17 states. There were 176 infants who received Covid vaccine and 203 without it. The mothers of Covid positive infants received 16% of their vaccines, while the mothers of Covid negative infants got 32%.
According to the CDC, there were limitations to this study. The study did not examine vaccine efficacy against particular variants, and did not determine if mothers had been Covid-positive or negative prior to or during pregnancy. Uncertain if there were other factors that contributed to their infant’s risk of getting infected, such as differences in behaviour between unvaccinated and vaccinated moms.
According to the CDC, pregnant women, those who plan on getting pregnant or nursing, should be vaccinated against Covid. According to the CDC, people who have recently or are currently pregnant face a greater risk of contracting severe illnesses from Covid.
