(Reuters) – U.S. House Republican leadership Kevin McCarthy on Thursday endorsed a challenger to Republican Representative Liz Cheney. Cheney was a vocal critic of Trump’s policies.
McCarthy, who is from California, stated that he will support Harriet Hageman during the Republican primary set in Wyoming for August.
It comes nearly two weeks after Cheney was censured by the party and Adam Kinzinger were censured for participating in an investigation of the attack on U.S. Capitol, Jan. 6, 20,21.
Cheney was among the 10 House Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment over a charge of encouraging insurrection related to the attack.
McCarthy declared, “I proudly endorse Harriet Hageman” for Congress. “The most effective Representatives in Congress are those who focus on constituent needs. Harriet, throughout her career has championed America’s resources and assisted the Wyoming people to reject overreach and burdensome government policies.”
Hageman (a land-use lawyer) is one of the candidates to unseated Cheney in Wyoming’s only House seat.
Cheney has received donations from out-of-state supporters as a result of the race. Hageman stressed the fact that most of the money her campaign received came from Wyoming citizens who could vote in the primary.
