LONDON, (Reuters) – British retail sales grew more quickly than anticipated in January. They recovered about half of the losses sustained the previous month when a wave Omicron coronavirus cases caused many to remain at home.

The retail sales volumes increased by 1.9% in January, following a decline of 4.0% in December. Although December’s fall was larger than originally estimated in a Reuters poll (although it saw a 1.0% increase), this is a greater rise than the average 1.0% gain.

Non-essential shops had been closed to prevent sales from increasing by 9.1%, while pre-pandemic numbers were 3.6%.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on Britain’s retail industry. Sales were up to 50% in January 2020 and July 2020 respectively, thanks to an increase in online shopping.

However, some retailers found it difficult to overcome repeated lockdowns. The last one ended in England on April 20, 2021.

Retailers now face new challenges from the rapidly rising consumer price inflation. It reached its highest point in almost 30 years at 5.5% in January. The Bank of England forecasts that it will peak at 7% by April.

Consumption of energy and food is on the rise, leaving consumers less cash for non-essential purchases. The biggest impact on disposable income on households in 30 years seems to be 2022.
