Container ship carrying Volkswagen vehicles catches fire near Azores -Breaking

BERLIN/LISBON – A container vessel carrying a few Volkswagen Group Vehicles (DE:) set ablaze near Portugal’s Azores Islands on Wednesday night, a spokesperson from Audi stated on Friday.

Portugal’s navy stated that all 22 crewmembers were safe and well after the evacuation.

On Wednesday, the Portuguese maritime authority posted a photo that featured smoke billowing off a ship.

According to Marine Traffic website, Felicity Ace, the ship was moving from Emden (Germany) – where Volkswagen operates a plant – to Davisville in Rhode Island.

On Thursday evening, captain of Horta’s port on Azorean island Faial said that the fire was under control.

Azorean authorities weren’t immediately available to comment.

According to German newspaper Handelsblatt, a Volkswagen USA email stated that 3965 cars belonging to the VW, Porsche and Audi brands were aboard.

Audi stated that some vehicles from its fleet were aboard, but didn’t specify how many. Volkswagen has not yet responded to my request for comment.
