Brian Flores has returned to the NFL.

Former Miami Dolphins Coach, Flores was hired by the Steelers to be their senior defensive assistant. Flores will be focusing on the linebackers of Pittsburgh, which includes T.J. Watt, NFL Defensive Player-of-the Year.

Three weeks ago, Flores, a Black man, filed a lawsuit against the NFL and three other teams for racist hiring practices. Flores led consecutive Dolphins winning seasons, before he was fired on January.

Flores maintained that his lawsuit would be continued even if Flores was offered a new coaching position. Following the retirement of Keith Butler, Flores will be joining a newly restructured Pittsburgh defense staff. Teryl Austin was promoted in order to succeed Butler earlier this month.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin released a statement, saying that Brian Flores is a great addition to our coaching team. “Brian Flores has mastered the art of teaching defensive players and I am thrilled about his joining,” Tomlin added. Brian’s track record speaks for itself and I am looking forward to his contributions to our team.”

Tomlin was the NFL’s most tenured Black head coach. He is also one of three Black men that led teams last year. Flores and Houston’s David Culley had to be fired. Houston later hired LovieSmith, a Black woman, while Miami hired Mike McDaniel who was biracial.
