MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Two areas in east Ukraine were government and separatist forces had been engaged in fighting since 2014. They were struck by over 1,400 blasts Friday. This is according to OSCE monitors. It was a sign of an increase in the level of shelling.

Russia-backed and self-proclaimed republics within Ukraine’s Donetsk-Luhansk region are in the center of tensions with Moscow over the massive Russian military buildup close to Ukraine.

Special Monitoring Mission OSCE deployed in conflict zones said that it has recorded 553 explosions at Donetsk.

Another 860 cases were also reported from Luhansk, a neighboring country. According to a late Saturday statement, both numbers were in effect as of Friday at 1630 GMT.

The monitoring mission confirmed one civilian casualty in a government-controlled area of Donetsk.

The total ceasefire violation count for Friday was more than 1,500, compared to 870 violations the previous day when there were 654 explosions.
