Biden convenes National Security Council on Ukraine crisis

Biden warned Putin that America and its allies will impose severe and swift sanctions on Russia.

WASHINGTON –President Joe BidenA meeting of National Security Council members will be held Sunday to discuss the rapidly changing security situation in Ukraine.

Jen Psaki, White House Press Secretary, stated Saturday night that the president is receiving updates on events in the field and that Russia’s national security team has “reaffirmed” that Russia can launch an attack against Ukraine anytime.

Biden spoke Friday about the U.S. belief in the Russian President Vladimir PutinUkraine attacked. “in the coming days.”

“We have reason to believe the Russian forces are planning and intend to attack Ukraine in the coming week, in the coming days,” Biden said in his second address in the past week. “We think they will attack Ukraine’s capital Kyiv. This is a city with 2.8 millions innocent citizens.”

Despite Russia having deployed almost half its army to Ukraine’s eastern and northern flanks, the Biden administration refused to forecast Putin’s strategy.

According to the Kremlin, more than 150,000 Russian soldiers stationed along Ukraine’s border with military-grade equipment have not been preparing for invasion.

Biden responded that Putin had still plenty of time to pursue diplomacy when asked.

Nation’s top diplomat said Sunday that both the U.S. & its allies hope for a peaceful resolution of this crisis.

“Until the tanks roll and the planes fly, we will do everything possible to convince President Putin to reverse the decision that we believe he made,” Antony Blinken, Secretary of State said in an interview with “Meet the Press” on NBC News Sunday.

Blinken stated that “until the very last moment, there’s still an option for him pull back,” and added that he was slated to meet his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in the next week.

Blinken appeared at the United Nations last week to give a stark assessment on what Russian forces might do to Ukraine, if they launched an attack.

Russian missiles and bombs are set to fall across Ukraine. Cyberattacks on key Ukrainian institutions will cause the obstructing of communications and jamming of communication lines. He said that Russian soldiers and tanks will move on to key targets which have been identified in detail plans and will be attacked by cyberattacks. told the U.N. Security Council.

Last month, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley told reporters at the Pentagon that Russia’s posture along Ukraine’s border was unlike anything he has seen during his four-decade military career.

He stated that the Russians deployed military forces, air and naval special forces to Ukraine’s frontier.

The type of forces arrayed: the ground maneuver forces and artillery as well as the missiles and air force are all packaged together. Milley explained that the threat to Ukraine would be very serious and would cause a lot of deaths.

He added, “It’d be terrible.”
