WASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. President Joe Biden started interviewing top candidates for the Supreme Court, a source who is familiar with the matter said Monday.

Biden repeatedly stated that the White House would name his first Black woman for the position and that he would do so before the end the month.

Stephen Breyer (Liberal U.S. Supreme Court) plans to retire in late 2012. This gives Biden the chance to stamp his own mark on the court. However, his decision will not alter the balance of power. Six conservative and three liberal members make up the nine-member court.
