LISBON: (Reuters) – On Tuesday, heavy tug boats sprayed water on a boat carrying thousands of Bentleys or Porsches that had been stranded off the Azores coast.

Felicity Ace carried around 4,000 vehicles, including Porsches, Audis, and Bentleys. The Ace caught fire last week.

All 22 crewmembers were evacuated that day.

Ship manager Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) stated in a statement that the vessel is still on fire, but was stable and that there had been no reports of oil leakage. According to the statement, the ship was moving further away from Azores islands in Atlantic ocean.

On Monday two large tugboats equipped with firefighting equipment arrived in Gibraltar. They were joined by another patrol boat, MOL stated, to spray water on the Felicity Ace, as well as cool it down.

Two additional tugboats with firefighting equipment are due to arrive on February 23rd and 26th.

MOL explained that MOL, together with all the relevant parties made every effort to limit the damage and fix the situation as quickly as possible.

João Mendes Cabeças, the captain of the nearest port on the Azorean island of Faial, said on Sunday the fire had lost its intensity, probably because there was little left to burn.

Cabeças said as the fire subsides and the structure cools down, firefighting teams and technicians might be able to board the vessel to prepare to tow it either to Europe or the Bahamas.

MOL also stated that “When conditions permit, the salvage team will take the Felicity Ace aboard for an initial assessment.”

Cabeças told Reuters over the weekend the lithium-ion batteries in the electric vehicles were “keeping the fire alive.” It wasn’t clear if the batteries were the cause.

MOL didn’t immediately reply to Reuters’ request for comment about the cause of fire.

Volkswagen (DE), the owner of these brands, stated Monday that they do not have additional information.
