LONDON, (Reuters) – Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of Britain, said that Britain and its allies will unleash a huge package of economic sanctions against Russia to cripple the economy following Thursday’s invasion of Ukraine by the Kremlin.

After Russia’s acceptance of the two separatist regions in Ukraine earlier this week, some Western countries are likely to announce coordinated sanctions.

Johnson stated in a television address that Johnson had made to the nation: “Today we will, in concert avec our allies. We will agree on a massive package economic sanctions designed to in time to hobble Russia’s economy.”

He stated that the West had to stop its dependence on Russian oil, which has given Russian President Vladimir Putin an upper hand in Western politics.

“Our mission is simple: this barbaric and hideous venture by Vladimir Putin must be abandoned diplomatically, politically and economically.

In comments made earlier on Twitter (NYSE) the British leader described the invasion as a “catastrophe” for Europe and promised to talk with the other G7 countries.

He stated, “I will speak with fellow G7 leaders. I call for an urgent meeting between all NATO leaders.”

Liz Truss, foreign minister, said that she summoned Russia’s ambassador for explanations on the Russian actions in Ukraine.

Britain threatened, along with the United States of America and European Union to impose harsher sanctions against Russia, should it invade Ukraine. This was a move that Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that Moscow wouldn’t do.

Johnson stated Wednesday to finance chiefs that he would impose Russia’s next toughest tranche of sanctions. He described the action as being capable of “making a difference” and “changing the outcome.”

On Thursday, he addressed Russians, saying he was not convinced that the invasion was being conducted in their names, and vowed support to Ukraine until “the flame of freedom burns bright again.”

He stated that he did not believe the Russian dictator would ever be able to subdue Ukraine’s national feelings and passionate belief in a free country.

“I have this to say to the British people as well as to those who hear the threats made by Putin to Ukraine’s allies: We will, of course, do everything we can to ensure that our country is safe.”
