(Reuters) – Roger Stone, a Republican political operative and Donald Trump ally, sued U.S. members of Congress investigating the Jan. 6, insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. They wanted to prevent them from obtaining his phone records.

A congressional committee seeks to identify who organized and coordinated the attack against the Capitol on January 6, 2021. This was the day Congress met to confirm that Joe Biden had defeated Donald Trump.

Stone claims that he did not participate in the Trump supporters storming the Capitol Building to protest the results of the election and reinstate Trump. The lawsuit also states that Stone is in violation of his privacy rights.

According to the suit, “The requested data is irrelevant to the investigation and sweeps away privileged communications.”

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

It also names AT&T (NYSE:) Mobility Inc., the telecommunications company that the committee has asked to provide the data.

Stone was an ally for Trump over many decades and self-described “dirty trickster” when it came to political issues. He was convicted in 2012 of lying during a congressional investigation about Russia’s backing of Trump’s 2016 campaign. Trump pardoned Stone and commuted Stone’s sentence, thereby releasing him from any criminal liability.

The committee representatives could not reach out for comment. According to The New York Times, a spokesperson for the committee refused comment.
