He spoke with Christian Lindner in a meeting of European Union finance ministers.
We are planning to attack the Russian banks. Financially, we want Russia to be isolated. Le Maire stated that we want to cut all the financial links between Russia’s and the international financial system.
On Friday, missiles attacked the capital of Ukraine as Russian forces advanced. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy appealed to the international community for more sanctions.
On Thursday, leaders of the European Union agreed to place new sanctions against Russia. They will join Britain and the United States in trying to sanction President Vladimir Putin’s aides for launching a large-scale attack against Ukraine.
The EU bloc resisted taking harsher measures than were requested by Ukraine. It also split on how much to apply sanctions. Details will be finalized in the next days.
