NEW YORK (Reuters), February 25th, 2008 – The short interest rate on the New York Stock Exchange rose 4.8 per cent in the middle of February, according to Friday’s announcement.

Short interest increased to 15.368 trillion shares on February 15, compared with the 14.662 million shares of January 31.

Investors who short-sell securities borrow shares then buy them back, hoping that the price will fall.
