REUTERS/Vasily Federalosenko/File PhotographTOKYO, Reuters – Two government officials who have knowledge of the situation told Reuters that Japan may impose economic sanctions against Belarus in order to retaliate for Russia’s invasion and support of Ukraine.
These sanctions would not be applied to individuals or organizations, it was unclear at the time. Tokyo would coordinate with the other industrial power members of Group of Seven, according to officials.
The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman declined to comment. Fumio Kishida’s office could not be reached immediately for comment.
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, sanctions against Belarus for Thursday’s invasion included 24 individuals and entities.
Japan announced sanctions against Russia for the invasion. Kishida called Moscow’s actions an inexcusable violation of Ukrainian sovereignty.
Russian troops were moving towards Kyiv’s capital on Friday, even though Russia and Ukraine indicated an openness to negotiation, following the invasions from the south, east and north. The attack, which threatens Europe’s post-1945 order, is a threat to the stability of Europe.
