SAN FRANCISCO – Elon Musk of SpaceX, a billionaire, said Saturday that Starlink satellite broadband services are available in Ukraine. SpaceX will also send more terminals there to aid the country’s internet disruptions.

Starlink service in Ukraine is now operational. Musk tweeted that more terminals are on their way.

Responding to a tweet from a Ukrainian government official, Musk asked Musk to supply Starlink stations to the troubled country.

“@elonmusk, while you try to colonize Mars — Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space — Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people!” Ukraine’s vice prime minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, tweeted.

According to internet monitors, the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused disruptions in Ukraine’s Internet connectivity, in particular in areas where the fighting is most intense.

Although it is extremely expensive, satellite technology may be able to provide Internet access for those who reside in areas that fiber optic cables or cell towers cannot reach. It can be used as a backstop for communication disruptions caused by hurricanes and other natural catastrophes.

Musk claimed that SpaceX currently has 1,469 Starlink Satellites activated and 272 moving towards operational orbits.
