Germany’s E.ON rejects halting Nord Stream 1 pipeline

BERLIN, (Reuters) – E.ON Europe, Europe’s largest operator in energy networks, has rejected calls to stop the Nord Stream 1 pipeline from Russia as part sanctions against Russia. This was according to the Rheinische Post newspaper.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki demanded Saturday that Nord Stream 1 be shut down, after the German government placed the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in limbo. The Nord Stream 1 has been bringing Russian gas into Germany every year since 2011.

Nord Stream is a joint venture between Russia’s Gazprom, Germany’s Oil and Gas Producer Wintershall DEA and PEG Infrastruktur E.ON., Dutch Gasunie, and French Engie.

E.ON holds a 15.5% share in Nord Stream 1 and said that the project is “completely different” from ongoing talks about Nord Stream 2.

A spokesperson from the company stated that Nord Stream 1 was a fully operating gas import pipeline and it is permitted. He also said the newspaper that the line had been fully used in the last two years.
