TOKYO, Reuters – Toyota Motor Corp announced Tuesday that it would suspend its domestic operations, resulting in around 13,000 car losses. This was after a cyberattack on a supplier for electronic parts.

There was no information immediately about the attackers or motive. Although it is unclear if there was any connection, the attack occurred just as Japan joined Western allies to clamp down on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

Fumio Kishida, the Japanese Prime Minister, stated that his government will investigate the incident to determine if Russia was involved.

Reporters were told by him that “it is hard to know whether this has to do with Russia” before he made thorough checks.

On Sunday, Kishida announced that Japan will join other countries to block access by Russian banks to the SWIFT international payments system. He said that Japan would provide $100 million of emergency assistance for Ukraine.

Kojima Industries Corp spokesmen for the supplier and said the company appeared to have fallen prey to a cyberattack.

Toyota spokesperson described it as a failure of the supplier system.

According to the spokesperson, it is not known if the stoppage at the 14 Japanese plants, which make up about one-third of the company’s global production, will continue beyond a single day.

Some plants owned by Toyota’s subsidiaries Hino Motors, Daihatsu and Daihatsu will be affected.

Toyota is the leader in Just-In-Time manufacturing. Parts that are received from suppliers go straight to the production line, rather than being stored. Toyota was the victim of cyberattacks.

Cyberattacks by foreign actors on Japanese businesses have occurred in the past. Sony Corp (T) was a 2014 company that exposed its internal information and closed down computers.

The United States claimed North Korea was responsible for the attack. Sony (NYSE:), a comedian about an assassination plot, released “The Interview”.

Toyota’s production stop comes at a time when the largest automaker in the world is already working to address supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID pandemic. It and other carmakers have had to reduce output.

Toyota also had some North America production stop this month due to parts shortages from Canadian trucker protests.
