Red Cross seeks funds for Ukraine aid, access to detainees -Breaking

GENEVA, (Reuters) – Red Cross agencies called on Tuesday for 250m Swiss Francs ($273million) to supply food, shelter and water for millions in Ukraine. The humanitarian situation there is rapidly deteriorating and those fleeing abroad.

International Committee of the Red Cross and International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies – the biggest disaster relief network in the world – made the joint appeal after a large Russian armoured column pounded on Kyiv six days following Moscow’s invasion.

Martin Schuepp, ICRC’s regional director in Europe and Central Asia said that the money is needed to help address humanitarian issues which have become overwhelming – water, food, shelter and psychological support – and these are increasing by the hour.”

The priority was to get to people who were detained in the conflict. He said that all sides are being in touch regarding detainee visits. He said that all sides are obliged to return dead bodies to their owners. However, ICRC teams remain restricted in movement because of insecurity.
