WARSAW (Reuters – The Western Powers must make Ukraine a no-fly zone to end the humanitarian crisis, an activist said Tuesday. It was a passionate plea for Boris Johnson from Britain to take more steps to aid Ukraine after Russia’s recent military aggression.

Johnson was interviewing journalists at the British Embassy Warsaw when Dariakaleniuk from the Anti-Corruption Action Centre, a Ukrainian activist, told Johnson that Ukrainians required a no-fly Zone.

Ukrainian women and children live in fear from missiles and bombs coming from the skies. She said that Ukrainians are desperate asking the West for protection of their skies, echoing with emotion.

“Britain ensures our security according to the Budapest Memorandum, so you aren’t coming to Kyiv prime minister, because you’re afraid.”

The 1994 Budapest Memorandum was signed by Britain and other nuclear powers, the United States of America, Russia, and Ukraine. It required that Ukraine give up its own atomic arms in return for security assurances.

Johnson replied that “not enough” could be done by the UK government in order to support you the way you desire.

The implication is that the UK could engage in Russian airstrikes, and would also be fighting directly with Russia. This is not possible or something we have ever imagined.”

Kaleniuk spoke out after the Q&A session to Reuters and condemned Britain’s failure to honor its security promises almost three decades back. She also stated that a no fly zone is essential to provide humanitarian assistance to eastern and central Ukraine.

“Ukrainian children have been hiding from the bombings, and Britain and America are saying that we won’t go to war against Russia and will not defend your skies. We are afraid of World War Three.” she stated.

What does the security guarantee actually mean? Nothing.”
