Nordstrom (JWN) reports Q4 2021 earnings beat

NordstromOn Tuesday, the retailer reported sales and profits for the holiday quarter that were higher than expected. This prompted the retailer to give an optimistic outlook for next year despite ongoing supply chain problems and high inflation.

Nordstrom shares rose more than 30% after hours trading following the announcement.

The retailer also called for improvements in Nordstrom Rack’s off-price segment, Nordstrom Rack. amid a reportFollowing recent quarters of poor performance, the company was looking into a potential spinoff.

Nordstrom reported that Rack net sales were down by 5% over the past two years. This is a significant improvement in sequential terms. from the prior quarterWhen its off-price section saw an 8.8% decrease compared to 2019,

The segment still lags Nordstrom’s full-line company, but that revenue stream has rebounded to almost flat with 2019.

Nordstrom CEO Erik Nordstrom announced that department store chain Nordstrom is focused upon three main things. These are improving Nordstrom Rack’s performance as well as increasing profitability. Also, optimizing the supply chain and inventory flow.

This is what Wall Street expected from the retailer in fourth quarter, according to analysts polled by Refinitiv.

Nordstrom’s third-month net income increased to $200million or $1.23 per Share, which is an increase of $33 million (or 21 cents per share) a year ago. This exceeded the $1.02 per share earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv.

From $3.65 billion last year, total revenue including credit card sales grew to $4.49 Billion. It exceeded estimates of $4.35 billion. The net sales (which don’t include credit cards revenue) increased by 23% over the previous year, but fell by 1% from 2019 levels.

Department store chain stated that the home, active designer, beauty, and children categories had performed well as customers sought more comfort clothing and to improve their homes.

According to it, suburban shops continue to do better than urban ones. It is likely that the U.S. has a shortage of tourists from abroad.

While digital sales saw some growth during the initial days of the pandemic, when many people remained at home, they fell 1% over the same period in 2020. However, they accounted for 44% in total revenue and rose 23% over a 2-year period.
