[ad_1]

(Reuters) – In less than a week, a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu was discovered in a Iowa commercial turkey flock. This makes it the second most recent outbreak of bird flu in America’s top egg-producing states.

Buenavista County was notified by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, (APHIS).

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig released a statement saying that USDA APHIS and Iowa Department of Agriculture were working closely with producers in order to track down, control, and eliminate this deadly disease.

Kim Reynolds signed also a Buenavista County disaster proclamation to help with the tracking, detection, and elimination of this disease.

Iowa last week reported that a bird flu case was discovered in its backyard chicken flock located in Pottawattamie County. In the United States, high-lethal bird flu cases were confirmed on commercial poultry farms in Indiana and Kentucky over the last month. This has triggered export restrictions to U.S. poultry products.

Iowa experienced the largest-ever U.S. avian influenza outbreak in 2015 that claimed the lives of approximately 50 million birds.
