PARIS, (Reuters) – The European Union approved a fresh round of sanctions against senior Russian officials. This was in retaliation from Moscow’s invasion and occupation of Ukraine. France announced Wednesday.

France which is currently the rotating president of the European Council said that the new sanctions would also apply to the maritime sector. It will exclude three Belarussian banks form the SWIFT banking network.

At a summit that took place in Versailles, France on Thursday and Friday, the leaders of all 27 members will officially approve these additional sanctions.

Over 2,000,000 people fled Ukraine, and hundreds of thousands were left without medicine or water after President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine almost two weeks ago.

Moscow refers to the “special military operation” as a disarming of its neighbor, and dislodging leaders it labels “neoNazis.” Kyiv’s Western allies dismissed that as a pretext for an unprovoked military war against a country with 44 million inhabitants.

COREPER II, which brings together each state’s permanent representative to the bloc ahead of the summit, agreed on the new sanctions.
