BUCHAREST, (Reuters) – President Vladimir Putin does not show any willingness to engage in diplomacy. This was stated by Kamala Harris on Friday while she visited Romania. She made the remarks three weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Harris acknowledged Romania’s help in rescuing thousands fleeing fighting in Ukraine. He also stated that Washington constantly reviewed the support level for NATO allies in light of the changing situation in the country.
Harris spoke at a news conference together with Klaus Iohannis, stating that “from everything we know and have seen, Putin shows not sign of engaging in serious diplomacy.”
Harris was asked if Washington plans to raise the troop numbers in Romania. Harris replied, “We will, on a daily basis,” to assess the need to keep the region stable.
Iohannis indicated that he underlined the necessity to have the NATO Battle Group in Romania operational soon during his discussions with Harris.
Bucharest was Harris’ second stop during a three-day tour through Eastern Europe. The United States along with the Group of Seven and the European Union will attempt to remove Russia from its “most preferred nation” status to press it into ending the conflict with Ukraine.
Harris met with Polish officials and Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw Thursday, and offered U.S. assistance to the calls for an investigation into Russian war crimes. The visit of Harris to Poland was made amid tension between the United States, Poland and over U.S. warplane shipments to Ukraine.
Andrzej Duda, the Polish president asked for more aid to shelter and feed the Ukrainians fleeing conflict. He said that he had requested Harris to speed up Washington’s process for refugees who wanted to travel to the United States.
Around 1.43 Million Ukrainians have fled Poland to escape the invading forces since February 24, when they invaded. More than 291,081 Ukrainians fled to Romania during that time.
According to the United Nations (UN), more than 2.3million people fled Ukraine in March 2010. They also warned of 5 million possible fleeing. This would be the worst humanitarian crisis Europe has seen since World War Two.
On Friday, President Joe Biden would sign legislation to aid Ukraine in financing ammunition and military supplies as well as humanitarian assistance.
Russia calls the actions it took in Ukraine a special operation to arm its neighbor and free its leaders, whom it refers to as neo Nazis. It has not denied that they targeted civilians.
