ANTALYA/Turkey (Reuters) – Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu met with Armenian Foreign Secretary Ararat Mirzoyan on Saturday in Southern Turkey, as part the neighboring countries’ attempts to heal their animosities after many decades.

They met in Antalya at a forum for diplomats. Turkey and Armenia have not had diplomatic or commercial ties since the 1990s. But they did hold talks in January as a first step to rebuild relations since a 2009 agreement, which was never ratified.

Both countries disagree on many matters, including the 1.5 million Armenians who claim they were massacred in 1915 during the Ottoman Empire’s precursor to modern Turkey.

Armenia claims that the 1915 massacres were genocide. Turkey admits that Armenians in Ottoman Empire died in conflicts with Ottoman forces in World War One. However, it contests these figures and claims the killings weren’t systematic.

According to the two nations, January negotiations were constructive and positive. This raises the possibility that relations could be restored and the borders reopened.

Tensions flared over a 2020 conflict in Nagorno Karabakh. Turkey accuses ethnic Armenian forces, claiming that they occupy land owned by Azerbaijan. Turkey called for an end to the alleged occupation of land belonging to Azerbaijani ethnic forces.
