REUTERS/Jonathan ErnstWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The White House approved $200 million of weapons and assistance to Ukraine on Saturday. This was after officials from Ukraine claimed that heavy Russian shelling had made it impossible for them to evacuate.
A senior official in the administration said that this decision will bring total U.S. aid to Ukraine for the last year up to $1.2 million.
Biden instructed Secretary of State Antony Blinken to allocate up to $200million through the Foreign Assistance Act for Ukraine’s defense.
These funds could be used to purchase weapons or other defence articles from the Defense Department stock as well as for military education and training in order to assist Ukraine.
This new money comes days after the U.S. Congress authorized $13.6 billion of emergency aid to Ukraine under a $1.5 Trillion measure to finance the U.S. government up through September.
