LONDON (Reuters] -An antiwar protester disrupted a live Russian state TV Channel One news bulletin Monday. They held up a sign and shouted slogans decrying the war in Ukraine.

Sign in English and Russian reads: “NO WAR. Stop the war. Don’t believe propaganda. These people are lying.” A second phrase that looked suspiciously like Russians against war was partially obscured.

On day 19, the extraordinary act was a sign of dissension. It took place when Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an operation he called “a special military action”, ordered the invasion and occupation of Ukraine.

Stop the war. As the news anchor continued reading from her teleprompter, the protester shouted “No to war.”

The protester was visible and heard for many seconds, before the channel switched over to a new report that would remove her from the screen.

Volodymyr Zeleskiy, the President of Ukraine thanked protester during his nightly Video Address:

I am thankful to Russians for their unwavering commitment to truth and integrity. Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to those who combat disinformation and communicate the truth to their loved ones.” And personally, to the woman with the poster opposing war who entered Channel One’s studio.

Kira Yarmysh was the spokesperson for Alexei Navalny (NYSE:). She wrote: “Wow that girl is cool.”

The video was quickly shared by her and has been viewed more than 2 million times.

PRO-KREMLIN CHANNEL

State TV provides the most reliable news source for Russians. It closely follows the Kremlin line, that Russia was forced in Ukraine to protect Russian-speakers from “genocide” and demilitarize it. Most of the world and Ukraine condemned this as an attempt to invade a democracy.

The women was identified as Marina Ovsyannikova (an employee of the channel) by OVD Info and the Agora Human Rights Group.

Pavel Chikov of Agora said Ovsyannikova has been taken to Moscow and had been detained. Tass News Agency reported that Ovsyannikova may be facing charges under the law against discrediting armed forces.

Public actions that discredit Russia’s army are now illegal. The March 4 law also bans the spreading of fake news and the “public dissemination of deliberately falsified information about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”. This offense can lead to a maximum 15-year sentence.

A video of Ovsyannikova, which was recorded prior to the incident and uploaded online, showed a woman who claimed to be Ovsyannikova. She said that she worked as an employee at Channel One and regretted having spread Kremlin propaganda for so many years. Her father, she claimed was Ukrainian and her mother Russian.

Russia is responsible for what is occurring in Ukraine right now. Vladimir Putin bears the responsibility for all this aggression,” she stated.

She said, “Now that the entire world is turning away from us, the next 10 generations will not be able to wash away this shameful fratricidal conflict.”

She exhorted Russians to demonstrate.

Anti-war demonstrations were stopped by authorities. According to OVD-Info (which monitors protests in order to provide legal assistance for those held), there have been 14,911 arrests.
