BRUSSELS/WASHINGTON – Next week, President Joe Biden and NATO leaders will gather in Brussels for a summit on Russia’s invasion.
Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, announced the meeting on March 24, via a Twitter post (NYSE:) Tuesday. The White House confirmed that Biden will attend as well as the European Council Summit later in the day.
Two days ago, Russian missiles struck a Ukrainian military base close to Poland’s border. This attack brought the war on Ukraine closer to the attention of the Western alliance.
NATO provided additional support to countries along its eastern flank in the months preceding the February 24 Russian invasion.
Jen Psaki from the White House stated that Biden is working to consolidate the alliance, as his administration has maintained close contacts with NATO allies since the start of the war.
She said, “His goal it to meet face-to–face and talk about the conflict and assess our current position.” “We have been extraordinarily aligned up to this point. It doesn’t happen accidentally.
Zbigniew Rau, the Polish foreign minister was quoted saying Biden’s visit to Poland seemed “very likely”. However, the White House refused to comment. Psaki indicated that the details of this trip are still being finalized.
The NATO defense ministers are also expected to meet Wednesday at what Stoltenberg calls “a moment defining for our security.”
Wendy Sherman, the Deputy Secretary-of State, stated that “I feel it’s very important trip by President,”. The U.S.’s solidarity with NATO, the European Union and other countries was unheard of. She also compared it to Russia’s more-overtly allied with China.
Sherman told CNN that one of Russia’s great advantage is the fact that it has very few allies and partners. Sherman said that if the PRC was a true partner, it would be a partnership of transactional relationships and not one of real interests.
Ursula von der Leyen was the president of EU Commission and said that she is happy to have further discussions with Biden. She wrote that transatlantic unity and coordination are crucial to increasing pressure on Russia to end this war.
Zelenskiy is pleading with NATO for a no fly zone in order to defend his country against Russian aerial bombardment. However, the alliance has expressed concern about any move that could bring it into conflict with Russia’s nuclear-armed neighbor.
When he speaks to the U.S. Congress Wednesday, it is likely that the Ukrainian leader will again make his case. Last week, he addressed Canadian lawmakers and British parliament.
