(Reuters] – Friday’s policy meeting at the Russian central bank is due to take place as sanctions on Russia over its invasion in Ukraine continue to isolate and destroy Russia’s economy.

These are five facts on Russia’s Central Bank Governor Elvira Nubullina.

Nabiullina, a Moscow State University economics graduate, became the first woman in the G8 to lead a central bank after she served as President Vladimir Putin’s advisor. She also held the position of economy and trade minister.

Nabiullina was a highly respected figure, especially by those living in the West. She is responsible for modernizing the central bank and turning it into an institution that foreign investors can trust to lead the economy through hard times.

After Russia’s 2014 annexation, she built a warchest worth $640 billion of foreign currency and gold reserves. She also oversaw the reduction of dollars in reserve.

Nabiullina was an ethnic Tatar, and one of the few females in high office. She earned Putin’s respect. In a December interview, Nabiullina said that high inflation could threaten the credibility of the central bank.

Famous for her coded messages and choice in clothing, Nabiullina has been known to send them. Following coordinated Western sanctions on Feb. 28, the 58-year-old made a striking figure in black during a press conference.
