(Reuters) -The Russian news agency TASS has extended Brittney Griner’s Russian detention for possessing vape cartridges containing cannabis oil to May 19.

TASS stated that Griner would be held for at least another two months by Khimkinsky Court in Moscow.

“The court granted petition of investigation and extended term of U.S citizen Griner’s imprisonment until May 19,” TASS reported.

A request for comment was not received by the WNBA or its players association immediately.

Ekaterina Kalugina, a member and semi-official of the Public Monitoring Commission with access to Russian prisons said that Griner was currently in a cell with two other women who have not been convicted. Griner stated that her only problem was that the prison beds weren’t long enough for Griner at 6’7″.

The Russian Customs Service did not identify Griner as a center for the Phoenix Mercury and said that a player had been detained by Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in February, after arriving from New York.

TASS identified Griner as the player, citing a source. Phoenix Mercury said, but did not elaborate, that it was aware of the Russian situation and is closely watching.

The customs agency said that cartridges with liquid with hashish oils were found in the luggage of the player. A criminal case was opened, which could lead to a sentence of between five and 10 years imprisonment.

It is not known when Griner (who plays in Russia during the winter off-season of the WNBA) was arrested.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, on February 24, 2018, her detention was made public.

Russia refers to its actions against Ukraine as “special operation”, which is meant not to invade territory but to degrade the military capability of Ukraine’s neighbor and to capture dangerous nationalists.

The U.S. warned citizens not to travel to Russia earlier this month and stated that its Embassy there was unable to provide assistance.

At a press conference jointly held with Moldova’s President Maia Sandu U.S. Secretary Of State Antony Blinken stated that the Biden administration had sent an embassy team for Griner’s case.

Griner won Olympic gold medals in the U.S. with national team teams in 2016 & 2021.
