(Reuters] – North Carolina state officials announced on Thursday that Mark Meadows is under investigation for his voter registration.
The probe was initiated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation after the case had been referred to it by a district attorney, according to Nazneen Ahmed (department spokeswoman).
The investigation is in response to claims that Meadows, who represented North Carolina in Congress from 2013 until joining the Trump administration in 2020, registered to vote in September 2020 at an address he did reside at, own or visit, the News & Observer newspaper reported, adding that the State Board of Elections is conducting a joint investigation.
Ahmed explained that the SBI has been asked to conduct an investigation. After the conclusion of their investigation, Ahmed will examine the results.
Unfortunately, the elections board was not immediately available for comment.
North Carolina requires that voters reside in the county where they plan to vote and must have lived there for at most 30 days preceding the election. This is according to the website of the state elections board.
The New Yorker first published these allegations in March. According to the outlet, Meadows had been registered at an address within the county, and was absentee voting in the 2020 general elections.
According to an online database maintained by the state election board, Meadows is registered to vote at the exact same North Carolina address.
Reuters reached Meadows, who is now a partner at the Conservative Partnership Institute. The institute helps conservatives win office, and Meadows was unable immediately to comment.
A congressional committee is investigating Meadows’ Jan. 6, 2021 attack at the U.S. Capitol in which Trump and his support sought to stop certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, has also brought contempt charges against Meadows.
