BEIJING (Reuters] – Wuhan, a central Chinese city has vowed a $100 billion ($15.7 billion!) space industry and to join the other Chinese cities involved in developing this sector.

According to Wednesday’s notice by the city government, Wuhan offers up to 50,000,000 yuan (or $7.88 million) each to financial incentives for projects that involve the manufacture of satellites, rockets, and spacecraft.

Although the amounts allocated to the inland city’s construction are small compared to the ambitious plans of other coastal cities with similar wealth, the efforts suggest that China is attempting to expand its space-power status by 2030.

China is planning to build large commercial satellite constellations, capable of providing services that range from tracking and monitoring coal shipments to high-speed Internet for airplanes.

Wuhan’s city government encourages companies to source locally-sourced software, equipment and services.

A firm that uses local products to produce more than 10% high-orbiting or low-orbiting satellites and spacecraft will be eligible for financial incentives up to 15,000,000 yuan.

Local products that account for greater than 30% will earn the company up to 50,000,000 yuan.

The tech city Shenzhen, in the southern Guangdong Province offered incentives of up to 300,000,000 yuan for projects related to satellite development and other related industries.

China also plans to build a commercial space port on the south island of Hainan.

China has constructed its fifth launch site for a rocket in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province’s eastern port.
