JAKARTA, Reuters – Indonesia’s $32 billion planned capital city move will be assisted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The Manila-based lender announced on Friday that it would mobilize financing for the relocation and assess the environmental and social effects.
In a statement, the multilateral bank stated that it would also assist with designing the Nusantara new city President Joko Widodo plans to construct in eastern Borneo.
Asking if the ADB would lend a loan for Indonesia’s relocation, the lender replied that it will provide technical support, which includes the establishment of an international conference, but didn’t give any further information.
Ahmed M. Saeed (Senior ADB Official) said that ADB would share the international lessons to assist NNCA in the design and financing of the capital. He was referring to Nusantara Capital Authority, a government agency responsible for the project.
Following an announcement by Japan’s Softbank Group (OTC:) Group, the bank said it wouldn’t invest in Nusantara despite comments made earlier by an Indonesian minister claiming that Softbank had offered billions to finance the project.
Bambang Susantono (ex-vice president of ADB) is heading the NNCA.
Susantono said in Friday’s ADB Statement that he is interested in learning from others about their experiences creating inclusive, carbon-neutral communities.
Jokowi (as the president is often known) has indicated that he does not want the government financing more than a fifth for the construction of the new capital, but private and foreign investors should finance the rest.
According to the chief of Indonesia’s sovereign fund, if it deems the project viable commercially, then the fund will invest in Jakarta.
It is hoped that construction will begin soon. Civil servants from Jakarta are scheduled to relocate to Nusantara by 2024.
